Spotlight on Student Success: Introducing the Office of Academic Resilience and Support (OARS)
Undergraduate Studies at USF has launched the Office of Academic Resilience and Support (OARS)—a new initiative dedicated to helping students navigate academic transitions, explore degree options, and stay on track for graduation.
Whether students are facing unexpected academic challenges or simply seeking guidance on their college journey, OARS offers a welcoming space for personalized support. Building on USF’s existing major reselection services, OARS provides a comprehensive suite of resources, including:
- Major exploration and alternative major planning
- Student success coaching
- Drop-in support for academic processes and decision-making
Personalized Coaching for Every Step of the Journey
At the heart of OARS is a team of Student Success Coaches who work one-on-one with students to help them set goals, build action plans, and develop essential skills like time management and organization. These coaches serve as accountability partners, meeting with students throughout the term to provide encouragement and keep them moving forward.
“Most students come to us when they’re experiencing a moment of change and need help navigating that transition,” said Justine Leigh, Assistant Director of OARS. “But many also come in to design their college experience and create actionable steps to make that plan a reality.”
Whether students are exploring new majors, preparing for a shift in career interests, or balancing academics with other responsibilities, OARS coaches are there to support both academic and personal growth.
A Collaborative Approach to Student Support
OARS is not a replacement for other campus services—it’s a connector. Students are regularly referred to Academic Advisors, Academic Advocates, Peer Mentors, and other departments that can support their unique goals and circumstances.
From first-year students adjusting to college life to seniors preparing for graduation, OARS serves students at every stage of their academic journey. By offering both proactive and responsive support, the office is helping to build a culture of resilience across campus.
“College is rarely a straight path,” Leigh explained. “Our goal is to help students adapt, grow, and keep moving forward—no matter what changes they encounter along the way.”
Connect with OARS
With its student-centered approach, OARS reflects USF’s commitment to fostering success through personalized guidance. Whether students are searching for the right major, developing new skills, or simply looking for a steady source of encouragement, OARS is here to help.
